5 Reasons Your Construction Firm Needs a LinkedIn Page

LinkedIn remains the undisputed champ among social media platforms for the construction industry, according to survey results rolled out at the Construction Marketing Association’s 2017 Social Media Summit. You can see on this graph that it far outranks other platforms, including the 800-pound-gorilla Facebook, with a whopping 92 percent using it.

Using LinkedIn is one thing, but getting results is where the rubber (or tracks) meets the road. The graph below suggests that construction firms agree with my assessment that it should be their number one social media marketing priority.

If you have a personal LinkedIn profile, you’re already one step ahead, but there is still room for growth. Below I will lay out the added benefits your construction firm can realize by building and updating an active company page.

Advertise Job Openings and Find Talent

LinkedIn has been branded as a recruiting platform since so many recruiters (and businesses) use it to find talent. It is, after all, an online resume for many of us. The reality is that it’s ideal for business-focused social media users and has a great deal of untapped potential.

Is it safe to say the biggest issue facing the construction industry is the labor shortage? Is it also fair to say that most people don’t scan the classified section of the newspaper to find jobs these days?

The talent you seek can be found on LinkedIn, from laborers to vice-presidents. Having a company page gives them a place to learn more about your company over time. That also means they’ll be more likely to see any posted job openings.

Help Prospects Find and Research Your Firm Online

Prospective customers are researching your firm online before you even get an email or phone call. It’s likely that they’ll do a Google search and click on a result or two from the first page of results.

What they will do if you don’t show up on page one is uncertain. The following unattributed quote; however, provides a subtle hint: “The best place to hide a dead body is on page two of the Google search results.”

Having a LinkedIn Company page improves the odds that your firm will show up in the first page of Google. A search might pick up a key word in your profile, or even a post. Check out the screenshot below to see how far down the Fraley Construction Marketing LinkedIn page shows up under a Google search for a real-life example.

Modern marketing, simply stated, is about getting found online. You must continue building out an online infrastructure and take advantage of every opportunity to increase your odds. A LinkedIn company page is one of many places to do so.

Another Place to Promote Your Firm

Think of a LinkedIn company page as a supplement to your website. It’s another place to post company news, jobsite photos, new products and services, equipment in action, and much more. The beauty of it is that prospects that follow you can keep up with your news on their time. And if they stumble onto your page, they’ll get an immediate feel for your firm, including a brief company profile and some recent updates.

And don’t forget creating a profile and posting on LinkedIn is basically free. Your only cost is for content creation, regardless of whether you do it in-house, or outsource to a firm like Fraley Construction Marketing.

Link Your Website to LinkedIn to Improve Search Rankings

A LinkedIn company page provides the opportunity to include your website address. This provides several benefits.

The obvious benefit is that visitors to your LinkedIn profile have a direct connection to your website if they want to learn more or contact you. What you might not realize is that these links, formally known as backlinks, can improve your internet search rankings. Posting your construction firm’s website address on sites other than your own can improve your rankings and get you in front of many eyeballs as a result. As Steve Winwood once said, “While you see a chance take it.”

Employees Are a Force Multiplier for Your Content

Getting your employees to engage with your posts (i.e. comment, share, like) can be a mind-boggling potential force multiplier. If your firm has 200 followers and you have 50 employees with a combined total of 10,000 connections, you can reach an exponential number of prospects.

Did you notice that I used the word “potential” above? No matter how strong your culture or how dedicated your employees are, it’s a tough haul for most construction firms to get the majority engaging with and spreading the company’s content on LinkedIn or any other platform for that matter. This is really the Holy Grail for social media because the compounding effect can exponentially improve your results.

Assuming you have a LinkedIn company page, what other benefits would you add to the list?

I was looking for an effective and precise way to market my new Black Splitter log splitting products to potential customers and that’s exactly what I got with Fraley Construction Marketing. Brian exceeded my expectations by suggesting a project application story instead of a standard new product press release, and identifying and getting it published in at least six industry trade publications. I will be doing more marketing projects with Brian in the future.

Brian was there for us when we had just a few days to put together a complex proposal for a P3 bridge replacement project we were bidding that involved detailed technical and financial plans.
